Starting therapy can feel like a big step. You might have questions, worries, or even doubts about what to expect. If you’re considering therapy for burnout, stress, or other challenges, knowing what happens in the first session can help ease any uncertainty.
As a person-centred counsellor, my approach is empathetic, non-judgmental, and non-directive. This means that our sessions are led by you—your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Here’s what to expect when we begin working together.
A Safe and Supportive Space
Your first session is about getting comfortable. There’s no pressure to share more than you feel ready for. Therapy is a space where you won’t be judged—it’s a place to be heard, understood, and supported.
If you’re feeling nervous, that’s completely normal. Many people start therapy unsure of what to say or where to begin, and that’s okay. There’s no “right” way to do therapy—it’s all about what feels right for you.
Checking in
To begin, I’ll introduce two short questionnaires. These aren’t tests—there are no right or wrong answers. They simply help us get a snapshot of where you are right now—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
These questionnaires help guide the session and highlight areas that might need attention. Whether you’re feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or just unsure of what’s wrong, this step helps bring some clarity.
Exploring What’s Brought You to Therapy
After the initial questions, we’ll spend the rest of the session exploring what has led you here. You might already have something specific on your mind, or you might just feel stuck and unsure of what’s next. Either way, this time is for you.
Some people talk about work stress or personal relationships, while others express feelings of exhaustion or anxiety. There’s no right or wrong topic—whatever you want to bring into the space is completely welcome.
My Role as Your Counsellor
I believe that you are the expert on your own life. My role is not to give advice or tell you what to do, but to listen, reflect, and help you make sense of your experiences.
I work to help you:
✅ Explore your thoughts and feelings in a safe space.
✅ Gain clarity about what’s troubling you.
✅ Work towards resolutions at your own pace.
In our first session, we’ll mostly focus on understanding what’s happening for you right now. Future sessions can involve deeper exploration, reflection, and working towards meaningful change—but there’s no rush.
Online or Phone Sessions—Whatever Works for You
I offer therapy online (via Teams) or over the phone, so you can choose the format that makes you feel most comfortable. Some people prefer face-to-face video sessions, while others feel more at ease talking over the phone.
Therapy should fit into your life—not the other way around. That’s why I offer flexible options so you can access support wherever you are.
What Happens Next?
At the end of our first session, we’ll talk about what feels right for you moving forward. You might decide to book another session, take some time to reflect, or explore other options. There’s no pressure—this is your journey.
If you’re ready to take the first step, feel free to reach out. I’d love to support you on your path to healing and clarity.
